Behind the Glow: My First Lumealert Lightbox for Sports Fans

Behind the Glow: My First Lumealert Lightbox for Sports Fans

Published May 15, 2025 by Eric Maclean

First of all, who are we?

We’re just a couple of fanatics, sports fans through and through, who wanted a better way to feel the game even when we couldn’t be there in person.

What started as a fun side project quickly turned into something bigger. We’re building LumeAlert together between diaper changes, late-night feeds, and catching highlights during nap time, because in December, 2025, we welcomed our first child into the world.

Now, it’s not just about building cool things for ourselves. It’s about creating moments that bring joy, excitement, and a little magic into homes like ours. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just love the vibe of game day, we’re with you.

Let’s start with why I started LumeAlert

March 5th, 2025

It started simple.

I wanted my Govee lights to glow my team’s color on game day. That way, when I woke up, I’d immediately know if my team was playing. No checking apps, no digging through schedules. Just walk into the room, see the color, and feel the game day buzz.

Once I found out Govee had an API, I went down the rabbit hole. I realized I could go way beyond just showing the team color. With the right setup, I could program the lights to react to live games. Scores, wins, walk-offs, you name it.

Turning on the First Light
Mid March, 2025

After just a few days of messing around, I had my first “LumeAlert” event live, and my lights actually reacted to a game in real-time.

At first, it was just for the Tampa Bay Rays. (Of course.) But it didn’t take long before I realized this could work for every team.

So I refactored everything. Cleaned up how scores were tracked, figured out the logic for multiple teams and events, and boom, LumeAlert was officially in motion.

Going Public
April 5th, 2025

After a long week of coding, testing, and fixing weird bugs I don’t even want to talk about, I had LumeAlert ready for launch.

This was no longer just for me, I wanted other fans to feel this, too. The moment your lights react when your team scores? It hits different.

100+ Devices Later
May 10th, 2025

We passed 100 connected devices this week,107 to be exact.

That’s 107 setups lighting up with LumeAlert events. 107 fans getting score updates in the most visual, in-your-face way possible. And that number’s growing every day.

What’s Next?

This lightbox prototype is a natural extension of that vision. It’s not just smart lights now, it’s team logos, team mascots, glowing, pulsing, celebrating with you.

⚡ When will this be available?

We’re planning to release the lightboxes in a few months.
